The new La Trobe Sports Park celebrated a milestone over the summer break, with Carlton Football Club’s VFLW side testing out the newly completed AFL football oval and pavilion during preseason training.
La Trobe sports clubs and students at the Melbourne Campus are set to take advantage of the state-of-the-art new facilities from Semester 1 including our brand new oval that rivals that of Melbourne’s best training grounds. The new oval, in addition to the FIFA-1 standard and accredited synthetic soccer pitch constructed in mid-2018, means our Sports Park’s facilities are some of the best in the state for women’s sport.
You might spot Carlton’s VFLW team, Melbourne City sides and the Preston Baseball club at the Sports Park this year, too.
Carlton CEO Cain Liddle
We want to provide our players with elite facilities, which is exactly what the new La Trobe Sports Park will provide.”
“With Carlton Football Club now fielding teams in the AFL, AFLW, VFLW and VFL, we are looking forward to bringing selected training sessions and games to La Trobe University’s elite training facilities in the northern corridor of Melbourne. The new La Trobe Sports Park and redevelopment of Ikon Park ensures all four of our teams have the high performance facilities they need to perform at their best,” Liddle said.
Stage two of the Sports Park’s development is now underway, which will see the construction of an indoor stadium with six multi-purpose highball courts, a plaza area and 100 desk spaces.
An exciting new Teaching and Research Building will house laboratories for biomechanics, strength and conditioning, sports analytics and exercise physiology, as well as modern teaching spaces.
The speedy progress of our Sports Park takes us another step closer to achieving our aspiration to be the nation’s preferred University for sport teaching and research, and industry collaboration to drive innovation in sport. It’s going to be a big year for sports at La Trobe!
